it’s in the details…

Last week, Gadora happily adopted out the Kindel vanity and Lane side-table to a delightful couple who responded to two separate Craigslist posts. It was so nice to meet them. As new homeowners, R. and T. promised their fresh furnishings would be perfect for their space.

As we conversed about the pieces (and moved them out into the sunlight for a brighter look), it was evident they had been reading Gadora’s musings. They mentioned they’d also responded to a request, and were chosen, for HGTV’s Property Virgins. Filmed earlier this year, this is their new home…

T. was kind enough to send a picture. And R. was thoughtful enough to send the following, “[We] were gushing about the whole experience and our beautiful new pieces all the way home! We’re getting the word out about you, ms. wilderS*– you’ve got fans :) Thanks again for the pieces and your wonderful craftsmanship! You brightened some engineers’ day!”

And with that email they completely brightened mine, too. While Gadora adored both pieces, as they were truly a labor of love, I am elated they’ve found such good people to live with!

* The “S” references the BlogLuxe nomination for “BEST EYE CANDY” whereby “gadorawilders” was nominated with an “S.” We chatted about that too. Now, there are 2 nominations for this here blog, and while more votes weighed in for gadora with an “S”, both have been pushing traffic Gadora’s way…

Not so age-appropriate…

Still not 100% sure what era the Kindel vanity hails from, Gadora is eager to learn… this Swedish drafting desk (circa 1790s – 1800s) at Vintage Modern comes pretty close: similar in style, shape and color.

But at $5,100, it makes Gadora’s red vanity a steal… (and her legs are waaaay better!!!!)

all things austin design…

While researching people I HOPE TO MEET here, Gadora came across the blog all things austin design. Owner and lead designer of a fresh new design studio (Design + Stuff) in Austin, I immediately think Adrienne Breaux is Gadorable! She knows Austin, after all, as evidenced by her posts on Austin Handmade…

Today, saddled with a huge project, she finds the time to blog Gadora Wilder’s Kindel vanity, AND the post on where to buy it (click text to read her post)…

“I’ll definitely want to spend more time on this talented local later, but in the meantime, check out for yourself the stylish repurposing of Gadora Wilder. Her fabulous job on this recently refinished old vanity proves her skill and keen eye!”

THEN…. spends a moment to write and say since we haven’t yet met, hope this will suffice… Well, YES. It does. But I can’t wait to meet her.

Kindel vanity on fire!!!

Get out your fire extinguishers, folks. This piece is red hot! Gadora finished the Kindel vanity this week, and after two days of drying time, brought it inside for a fancy photo shoot.

Before, the lines were exquisite but the piece showed definite signs of wear. The drawers’ interior simply needed a wipe down.

StripeThe finished piece is ravishing! (Didn’t I hear someone say, was it YOU Mother?, “If you don’t toot your own horn, no one else will!”) Well, darn tootin’, this piece is better than Gadora even imagined.

Red with envy.

As the polyurethane coat is drying on the Kindel table, and oh it’s soooo shaping up, Gadora pauses to bring you some red inspiration. Surprisingly few brilliant red pieces on the Net, here are some of my faves:

5-drawer dresser, more a coral color, “pops” against the light aqua walls. The piece sits nicely in a 1940′s brick cottage house in Athens, GA. Love! For an in-depth look, click on RinneAllen.

Sure wish I could hug up on this cabinet. It’s loverly. And Kim, Gadora likes the idea of it sitting against a blueish gray wall, too.

Gadora‘s heart skips a beat for this wooden table at Toronto’s Ministry of the Interior. Would also LOVE it narrowed, and behind a sofa. Mmmm.

A color palette perfect for the Kindel vanity…bright, energetic, warming. How did the two (male) models-turned-shooters do it? Like many New Yorkers, they dragged stuff home. “It’s all based on what you could carry on a bicycle,” Bender said. “We’d go around on our bikes picking through the trash and whoever brought home the most fashionable object was the winner of the day.”

Well, theirs is some pretty amazing crap. Gadora is headed outdoors to check on the drying. Getting close, very close.

She’s my cherry pie…

Originally, Gadora believed this Kindel vanity table desired a decoupage of maps on its top, and I found some doozies: maps of the Holy Land, Europe, the world as it was—all from several National Geographic magazines, circa 1964.

As Gadora envisioned the finished project the maps just wouldn’t be flashy enough, it wasn’t until I came across a can of red paint that the vanity made sense. It hoped to be peppered with pizazz. Careful to leave the original teal blue details (the inspiration for the maps in the first place), it is starting to take shape.

Gadora “stuck” (thanks Mod Podge) with part of the orginal plan and incorporated a map on the inside… a lil sweet surprise.

Baby, It’s cold outside.

Bundled in sweats, Gadora spent the bulk of April’s 5th day making sense of the item-surplus in the garage (let’s call it a shop, shall we?), and reorganized it for a bit more space. The Kindel vanity has been weighing heavily on my mind. There is much to do to make it sparkle…and I see decoupage.

Gadora scored a stack of well-preserved ’60s maps stripped from the pages of National Geographic. I purchased my first brayer and am now ready to get to work. But baby, it’s cold outside and as such here’s a nod to my celebrity girl-crush Zooey Deschanel. As the April wind howls around me, Gadora can’t get this number out of my noodle.

Ok, back to the Kindel. A more recent obsession is my Fisher Price glow globe with view finder I’ve happily carted around these here United States. Noticed in a box yesterday, it wants to come out. Bought it as an adult on a road-trip to Houston, it still makes me giddy.

I adore the idea of re-purposing an outdated map. Cartographers forgive me. Many maps served this Bombus chair well. I’ll not yet try my Mod Podge on the curved surface of the Kindel’s legs, but will try my hand on it’s top.

It should warm up tomorrow and Gadora should get out there and get to it; my Kindel vanity wants to earn its name.

Kindel vanity with mirror…

Gadora found a vanity with a mirror in a lady’s garage (let’s henceforth call her “Crazy Cakes”). CC posted her stuff on Craigslist and I responded. We agreed to meet. “We’re off Keller-Hicks road, just past the Extreme Dream House Make-Over TV show home” she rattles in one breath, “you caaaain’t miss us.” I’d remembered that Ty Pennington’s “Extreme Home Makeover” had indeed come quite close to our Lil Keller hood. And Gadora was happy to see it.

Well, I did miss Crazy Cakes’ house. Her erroneous directions were long-winded, and didn’t include a drive by the Extreme Home. Gadora finally arrived to find  CC had a whole mess of stuff in her garage. I specifically wanted this dresser but “Crazy Cakes” insisted I look at ALL her stuff. It took me a day to think about it (she was a pushy, pushy ‘garage’ sales girl). She’d quoted me a price, and that’s all she would do.

By the following day, CC had called and texted (both more than once) to see if I was interested in ALL of her pieces. I agreed to come back by, and through some wheeling-n-dealing got my Kindel vanity with mirrored top. Love it! Planning to decoupage some vintage National Geographic maps I scored at Sunday’s Estate Sales, I think it’s new skin will fit right in.

Kindel

Doing some preliminary research, I’ve found “Kindel” online. But not having luck identifying this particular piece. *Gadora needs the help of your savvy friend who surfs ebay with the greatest of ease.

** Gadora’s take on the Extreme Home… it’s ghastly over-sized. Plopped down on an ugly, ugly street West of Keller (tall browning prairie grass, horse pastures kicking up sandy dirt, and  bare Mesquite trees) it is a spectacle. People craning their necks to gawk at it and parked in the middle of the road, months after it was revealed (both live and then on TV), it draws a crowd. Nestled closely to the moderately sized dwellings it shares a street with, it’s a far cry from the low-slung ’70s roofs of its neighbors. It’s indeed true. You cain’t miss it.
